Learning objectives

The course aims to provide the student in Biomedical Laboratory Techniques with the basic historical-cultural notions for understanding the professional role they are about to exercise (introductory module).
This path will therefore include an initial part consisting of a brief historical and regulatory overview of medicine aimed at understanding the role of the laboratory within the healthcare environment. This will be followed by a part concerning the role of the pre-analytical phase for error control (Pre-analytical Semeiotics I) and the learning of some basic analytical principles such as: colorimetry, photometry and spectrophotometry (Semeiotics II)

Prerequisites

Course unit content

This course represents the first step in learning the basic contents of laboratory medicine and includes:
- brief historical and normative excursus on the birth of laboratory medicine and health professions in Italy;
- learning of the theoretical principles of laboratory semeiotics concerning pre-analytical variables and related errors, analytical variability and instrumental analytics concerning in particular: the principles of colorimetry, photometry and spectrophotometry.
I Quality controls and the principles of preparation and measurement of calibration / calibration curves.

Full programme

• Brief historical overview of medicine, in particular of laboratory medicine
• Reference legislation for the development and definition of the functions and responsibilities of the health professions in Italy.
• Contents of the Code of Ethics and of the specific professional profile.
• Pre-analytical semeiotics and the causes of pre-analytical error.
• Semeiotics II: Analytical variability, instrumental analytics (principles of colorimetry, photometry and spectrophotometry).
• Quality control (internal and external)
• The instrumental calibration of quantitative and qualitative methods.

Teaching methods

The teaching methodology used is participatory, with classroom discussion aimed at inducing the ability to reflect and provides for lectures, in compliance with safety standards, except for further provisions due to the persistence of the health emergency. In this case the lessons will be carried out telepresence (in synchronous-streaming) on the Teams platform. However, both methods will preserve the possibility of interacting in real time with the teacher.
The program and the material will be posted on the Elly platform (https://elly.medicina.unipr.it).

Assessment methods and criteria

(https://sea.unipr.it/it/servizi/le-eli-che-supporto-studenti-con-disabilita-dsa-bes)
