Learning objectives

The English course for the Health Professions aims to provide students with the tools to understand written and oral texts, for the purposes of general and professional linguistic development.

Prerequisites

Students must have a good knowledge of everyday English at B1 level, according to Council of Europe’s Common European Framework (CEFR).

Course unit content

The course is based around topics related to the medical-health field and uses a variety of authentic written and oral material. For each input (content, vocabulary or grammar) there follows a brief interactive check in the form of a quiz. The transition to the next section of the program is dependent on reaching a minimum score in the quiz. As well as the content of the texts, revision of some linguistic functions and structures, the acquisition of specific terms pertinent to the subject matter is considered particularly important. The course consists of a main 'basic' module common to all the health professions (7 units) and a 'monographic' or specific module (1 unit) for each Course of Study

Modules for specific Course of Study:
- Course in Audioprosthetic Techniques: information for the patient, the ear, prostheses, hearing loss, hearing tests
- Course in Speech Therapy: language disorders, stuttering, language and the brain
- Course in Medical Laboratory Techniques: equipment, collection of blood samples, cell biology
- Course in Radiology: imaging, information for patients, interviews with patients, and the anamnesis

Assessment methods and criteria

Based on the e-learning form of the course, the final exam will be on computer, and will deal with al the arguments of the lessons, including text comprehension and therminology.
