Integrated course unit module: IMMUNOLOGY AND IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY

Learning objectives

The objectives of the Immunohematology course are to acquire the knowledge and understand the biochemical, genetic and typing methods of blood group systems AB0, Rh and other erythrocyte antigens. Provide theoretical knowledge related to first and second level pretransfusional immunohematological tests: direct and indirect Coombs test, compatibility test, elution test, identification and titration of anti-erythrocyte antibodies. Acquire knowledge on Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn (HDN) and on other haemoliytics diseases. Provide information on criteria for assessing donor suitability and type of blood components donation. Acquire knowledge and skills related to the production, storage, quality and safety requirements, of first and second level blood components and plasma derivatives. Provide knowledge and skills related to the production and indications of use of blood components for non-transfusional use. Provide knowledge regarding acute and chronic hematological diseases and indications for transfusion of blood components. Provide the basics on adverse reaction and complications following blood transfusion and their handling and also provide knowledge on immunohematological aspects related to AB0 incompatible kidney transplants and bone marrow and hematopoietic stem cell transplants. The course allows the student to apply the knowledge gained in the context of biomedical laboratory.

Teaching methods

The topics in the program will be presented and discussed through lectures, with the aid of iconographic material, trying to involve the student so that it can be an active part of the lesson.Lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are not implemented. Supporting material will be available on the specific, student-reserved platform (Elly) and will include slide presentations, audio-video aids or video-recording of the lectures.

Assessment methods and criteria

Learning outcomes will be verified through an oral examination. Questions on the topics relating to the course will be used to test knowledge and understanding of the student in the discipline, and her/his ability to apply such knowledge and understanding in occupational contexts. Using the knowledge also acquired in other courses the student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding about the mechanisms of immune system activity in the context of immunohematology
