Learning objectives

The main objectives of the course are to provide complements on the measurement techniques of mechanical and thermal quantities and to enable the student to correctly perform the digital acquisition of data from mechanical systems in general, to choose the most suitable methodology of pre-processing and to perform analyzes in order to identify the characteristic parameters of the systems themselves and their diagnostics. Compared to the basic courses of Measurements, this course is focused on the analysis of signals; numerical processing techniques are taught and used in the time and frequency domains (frequency response, coherence function, Hilbert transform, cepstrum, time-frequency transforms, zoom-FFT); notions on analogue / digital signal conditioning techniques are also taught.

Prerequisites

Metrology and systems for measurement and monitoring

Course unit content

Signal Analisys fundamentals
System Identification

Full programme

Signals in time domain: Classification and analysis. Fourier transform, Spectral measurements.

Bibliography

The PDF course lessons, and all the material used during lessons and exercises (transparencies, system diagrams, Excel sheets, movies) are made available to students via Elly portal.
In addition to the shared material, the student can personally study some of the topics discussed during the course by referring to the following texts:
- J. Bendat and A.G. Piersol: Engineering applications of correlation and spectral analysis, John Wiley and Sons
- J. Bendat and A.G. Piersol: Random Data, John Wiley and Sons
- G. D'Antona, Alessandro Ferrero Digital signal processing for Measurement systems, Springer
- A. Brandt, Noise and Vibration Analysis, signal analysis and experimental procedures, Wiley

Teaching methods

The lessons will be given through the team platform, live or recorded in any case with the online presence of the teacher during the scheduled hours. Computer laboratories will be taught in a similar way.

Assessment methods and criteria

Exam carried out through a written test of about 6 questions on the course topics with possible numerical exercises.
