Learning objectives

The course aims to:
- provide the basic tools for understanding Cultural Anthropology and its practices (oppure applied dimension);
- learn to listen and understand social dynamics, in relation to contemporary processes, with a particular focus on educational processes, migratory, intercultural and participatory phenomena;
- participate in the development of critical thinking on contemporary reality and on all those aspects and factors that require the ability to analyze, criticize and develop a reflective capacity;
- promote the acquisition of collaborative and communicative skills in the ethno-anthropological disciplines and especially in the practice of the educational profession.

Course unit content

The course will deal with key concepts of cultural anthropology, the development of anthropological thought, practices, research and reflections typical of the anthropological gaze. At the same time and in relation to the issues related to the history and development of Cultural Anthropology, the course will focus on applicative and practical aspects of the research through readings, discussions and exercises. The concepts of culture, cultural relativism, identity, ethnocentrism, cultural translation, racism, will be treated with the aim of providing interpretations of contemporary cultures, traditions and events. Particular attention will be given to those aspects of the anthropological gaze that can contribute to a vision of cultural heritage and the cultural landscape, as an educational practice. The practice of field research and the approach to the demo-ethno-anthropological museum as a place of interpretation will be treated as areas of ethnoanthropology educational practice.

Teaching methods

The lessons will take place following three main methods: a) lessons in which the contents of the exam texts will be illustrated and further information and examples provided by the teacher; b) group discussions; c) exercises.
