Learning objectives

Possess knowledge for the planning and management of pre and postoperative nursing care for the orthopedic traumatized patient.

Course unit content

At the end of the lessons the student has nursing knowledge on: recognition of the type of trauma, the traumatic mechanism and the basic knowledge of the diagnostic procedure and nursing treatment to be performed following trauma.

In particular the student:
- is able to recognize the biological and mechanical mechanisms of trauma. Biomechanics
- upper limb fracture
- lower limb fracture
- fracture of the femur
- legislation on the fr. Femur
- pain Legge 38/10
- pre and post-operative mobilization (example Pt with FR. of femur)
- pathological fracture
- the aids used in a traumatology department and their management
- passive and active mobilisation
- hygiene and sanitation of orthopedic devices
- rehabilitation treatment, vision of the ortho-geriatric patient
- overview of some types of rating scale
- pain rating scale
- mild, moderate, severe pain,
- NRS, FPS (I mention one-dimensional scales and multi-dimensional scales)
- Braden scale (LDD pressure ulcers)
- Brass scale (difficult resignation risk index)
- Conley scale (risk of falls)
- LDD monitoring (example reading the Parma Hospital Procedure)
- compartment syndrome, knowing how to recognize it
- pre- and post-operative complications in a traumatized patient
