Learning objectives

Knowledge and ability to communicate
The objective of the course is the consolidation of the acquisitions that are fundamental for the correct and complete description of the built object and its components, in order to provide an exhaustive and articulated representation of it.

Skills
Through the verification of the correct use of computerized drawing tools, the ability to apply the acquired knowledge will also be verified, through the advanced computerized drawing tools, which will be illustrated and used during the course.

Autonomy of judgement
Upon passing the exam the student must have developed the ability to critically evaluate which tools and techniques of representation are the most suitable in the graphic rendering of the survey and design of specific characteristics of architecture and civil engineering.

Communication skills
Through the overview provided on the most popular parametric drawing, three-dimensional modeling and graphic editing software, students will develop, through the choice of a specific drawing program, the ability to describe and communicate at various scales the place, the architectural space and their components, through the application of the knowledge of representation techniques inherent in the new advanced digital instrumentation of drawing.

Learning skills
The exercises assigned, on the survey and on the project, expressed in the final works requested, have the aim of consolidating the student in the correct use of representation methods and in the use of the most advanced computerized design programs: the student should have matured the knowledge and skills of the discipline in order to face, in the future, a deepening and autonomous application of these aspects.

Prerequisites

Good knowledge of the use of Autocad and regulatory principles
and use of architectural and urban representation

Course unit content

The objective of the course is the consolidation of the acquisitions that are fundamental for the correct and complete description of the built object and its components, in order to provide an exhaustive and articulated representation. The aim is pursued through the knowledge of the architectural and urban environment in order to understand and describe at various scales the place, the architectural space and their components, through the development of knowledge of representation techniques, especially those related to the new digital instrumentation of the drawing, applied to both existing and new construction.

The course is divided into two modules that will take place in parallel.

In Building Design 1st module (6 CFU), borrowed from the course of Digital Modeling of Architecture held by prof. ssa Chiara Vernizzi in the course of Master's Degree in Architecture and Sustainable Cities, the lessons will take place through the analysis of the instrumentation and procedures of the project design: from the sketch to the digital model, addressing the various phases of the construction project (conception, design, definition and construction of the architectural object) and the related techniques of representation and graphic and modeling synthesis, retracing the entire process through the application of the main concepts on an agreed building.
Through the presentation of the most widespread computerized parametric design and three-dimensional modeling programs, the digital technologies for the processing of information with the aim of representative integrations will be illustrated, exploring the potential of some parametric graphic software dedicated to architecture (BIM), and analyzing the codes and graphic conventions to be used with these tools in the representation of the executive project.
In detail, the lessons will focus on the following topics:
The project design: the types of works: the design of the project; the description of the project; the multimedia communication of the project; the presentation of the project - the design phases: preliminary, final, executive
The digital representation of the project: an overview of the most common parametric software: Allplan; Archicad; Revit.

In Building Design 2nd module (6 CFU), held by Prof. Andrea Zerbi, the lessons will take place through the identification of the correct way to read and represent architecture, its paths and environments. In particular, the attention will be focused on the existing architecture, leaving ample space for relief, intended as the most suitable scientific tool for the knowledge and understanding of architecture built in its ideative, formal and technological-constructive components.
In order to provide students with the essential tools for understanding the contents of the course, after having addressed the theoretical and methodological aspects of the disciplines concerned through some ex-catedra lessons, students will be asked to carry out the survey of a building and the subsequent computerized graphic rendering on a 1:50 scale.

Teaching methods

The program takes place through the identification of the correct way of reading and understanding the built environment through the representation of its components, understanding drawing as a means of documentation and study for the documentation of the architectural and urban context.
In the lessons the role of representation for the management of the survey and the project is analyzed, from the conception to the realization phase, operated on some architectural applications agreed with the teacher.
For this reason, after having tackled the theoretical and methodological aspects inherent to the architectural survey, students will be asked to carry out the direct survey of a building and the subsequent computerized graphic rendering in 1:50 scale.
The lessons will continue through the analysis of the instrumentation and procedures of the project design: from the sketch to the digital model, addressing the various phases of the construction project (conception, design, definition and construction of the architectural object) and the related techniques of representation and graphic and modeling synthesis, retracing the entire process through the application of the main concepts on an agreed building.
Through the presentation of the most widespread computerized design programs of parametric type and three-dimensional modeling, digital technologies for the processing of information with the purpose of representative integrations will be illustrated, making the drafting of both relevant and project works through the choice of one of the software presented.
At the end of the lectures and in response to the topics dealt with, a series of tables will be required to apply the notions learned in relation to the principles of representation of the survey of a building previously agreed with the teacher (it is possible to carry out this first exercise in small groups, from 2 to 3 people) and the design of a building, related to the theme identified in the current year, according to the indications received from the teacher (this second exercise is instead to be carried out individually).
The building elements represented, relating to both exercises, will be composed of graphic plates in A1 format (84 x 59.4 cm), placed horizontally, (subsequently printed in reduced form - A3 - and bound with metal spiral to form a file that will constitute documentation of the work done and as such will be withdrawn from the teaching staff).
The representation technique to be used for the realization of the final tables to be presented to the exam in relation to the project design (to be subject to mandatory revisions by the teacher), is necessarily that of the computerized design, expressed through the use of a parametric software chosen by the student.

Seminars related to issues of city history, architecture, survey, design and archival research will be held by external specialists in order to make the didactic path more precise and articulated.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination consists of the presentation of the graphic and project works written on the agreed themes, considered as evidence of the training as a critical ability to select the most appropriate techniques of representation and an oral interview on the themes dealt with during the lessons and seminars.
