Integrated course unit module: PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY CARTOGRAPHY AND GIS

Learning objectives

The Cartography and GIS modules arecarried out through lectures on the characteristics of topographic maps and exercises related to: determination of coordinates in geographic and kilometric systems; construction of topographic profiles; delimitation of river basins.
The part concerning the use of a GIS is carried out through lectures and through practical exercises at the computer. Acquired knowledge of the most commonly used commands for the visualization and analysis of cartographic works, the digitalization of cartographic data with QGIS.

Teaching methods

The course is carried out through lectures and practical exercises on maps and computer. Acquired knowledge of the most commonly used commands for the visualization and analysis of the cartographic works, the digitalization of cartographic data and the creation of layouts through QGIS. Practical applications of using a GIS are performed along the course.

Assessment methods and criteria

1) Coordinates of a point, construction of a topographic profile and delimitation of a river basin from a topographic map
2) Execution of a verification exercise of the knowledge acquired in the data management and operation of QGIS.
