Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course the student will acquire the main knowledge of the different classes of materials as well as their specific production technologies.
Expertise
The student will be able to make informed choices in the selection of materials for the various applications. The student will be able to make informed choices in the field of materials production and processing technologies.

Judgment autonomy
After passing the exam, the student will develope the ability to critically evaluate the analytical data of the mechanical behavior for a particular material to predict its behavior, as well as the ability to identify appropriate processing technologies.

Communication skills:
After passing the exam, the student will gain sufficient knowledge of language, at least as regards the specific technical terminology of the course.

Learning skills:
The student , who has attended the course, will be able to deepen the material knowledge through the independent consultation of specialized texts, scientific or popular magazines, even outside the topics covered in class.

Course unit content

The course will be divided into the following topics:
INTRODUCTION.
The materials and their properties.
POLYMERIC MATERIALS.
Structure and properties. Technologies for polymeric material production.
THE COMPOSITE MATERIALS.
Structure and properties. Technologies for composite material production.
CERAMIC MATERIALS.
Structure and properties. Ceramic powders: natural and synthetic raw materials. The sintering process: thermodynamic and kinetic aspects. Advanced ceramic materials and innovative techniques and technologies of synthesis and production. Ceramic coating and surface functionalization.
THE GLASS.
Structure and properties. The process of obtaining glass and technologies for glass plate and hollow glass production.

Teaching methods

Lessons (80%);
classroom exercise and lab activity (15%);
educational visits (5%).

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam comprises an oral discussion and the presentation of the lab activity. The final score is given by the average of the scores of oral test and of the lab activity. In the oral test the student will have to demonstrate to have the required knowledge on the various classes of non-metallic materials, their production and application, the correlation between structure and properties.
