Integrated course unit module: RIVER BASIN MANAGEMENT

Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding:
At the end of the course the student will complete the knowledge concerning river basin management both in mountain and plain streams.

Applying knowledge and understanding:
The Student will be able to estimate the main characteristics of flood events, to identify the most appropriate hydraulic structures and to design them.
The student will be able to apply flood propagation models and hydrological models.

Making judgments:
The student should be able to evaluate, with critical mind, projects developed by Hydraulics Engineers on the contents of the course.

Communication skills:
The Student will be able to describe and to present, in a clear and convincing way, the results of numerical modeling and data elaboration by means of drawings, tables and texts.

Prerequisites

It is useful to have familiarity with MS Office.
It is useful to have familiarity with CAD.

Course unit content

Flood routing: Hydrologic unsteady flow models: theory, parameter calibration and application of Muskingum method. Hydraulic unsteady flow models: De Saint Venant hypotheses and equations; initial and boundary conditions for sub- and supercritical flows; methods of solution: characteristics, finite difference (explicit and implicit), Courant-Fredrichs-Levy stability criterion.

Fish passes. Types of fish passes, design and dimensions.

Sediment transport. Sediment grain size and properties. Threshold of sediment motion: Shield’s diagram. Bed load estimation formulas.

Flood control. Structural measures: land reforestation, river embankments, stream corrections, canal spillways, diversions, reservoirs, flood control reservoirs. Non-structural measures: flood hazard maps.

Teaching methods

The course is made of class lessons, through slides, and training in informatics lab.
During the course several seminars regarding case studies will be organized. The Professor will help students during the preparation of the final report.

Assessment methods and criteria

The Student has to develop a project during class and has to complete it in autonomy. The Student must write a final report and provide CAD drawings.
Once the Professor has validated the report, the Student is allowed to do the oral examination.
The evaluation criteria of the examination are: 25% written report (proper analysis of the experimental data, clarity in presenting the results); 75% oral exam (theory questions, application of theory also to original problems and speaking ability).
