Learning objectives
At the end of the curse, students should be able: - create and manage a database with Excel; - import Excel files on other statistical software and perform test of descriptive and inferential statistics; - create and handle an experimental database obtained by biomedical devices, controlling the factros that may induce a wrong analysis.

Course unit content
This course is strictly related to that of medical statistics.
PROGRAM
Definition of “information”. The information in biomedical field. Software and information processing. Database definition. Excel: principles and operations. A database with Excel. Export a database to other statistical software. Database variables: numeric and grouping variables, strings. Operations among variables. Functions in Excel. Graphs in Excel. Principles on other statistical software: freeware software and SPSS.
Signal processing in biomedicine: the signal from spectroscopic devices. Direct application of the theory of errors. Calibration curves and the method of successive additions. Non-linear regression. Limit of Detection and Quantification. Processing of complex signals and Area Under Curve.
Note: we will use of the program Foglio_elettronico by Openoffice 4, but in the case of significant command variations, we will see also Excel 2013 or Excel 2016 inside Microsoft Office.

Bibliography
Classroom slides (uploaded on Elly after 2/3 of the course) are the
reference point for the exam. Some further reference books: each book about data analysis with Excel/SPSS.
Teaching methods
During the classroom lectures the topics of the module program will be illustrated and commented. Each theory argument with mathematical formulae will be explained with the use of simple and practice examples,
so that the student can focus his/her attention on basic concepts more than the formulae themselves. Students can use software like Excel and SPSS and may analyze and correctly interpret experimental data based on several examples and simulations reported by the teacher.
Assessment methods and criteria
The verification of the achievement of module objectives is a written or oral test, mainly consisting of questions about the arguments treated during the lessons. The exam will be done together with that of medical statistics. It will contain: open questions, multiple response quiz, exercises. The grade will be in 30/30 and its weight will be based on the credits of this module respect to those of the integrated course.
