Course unit content

Young measures for oscillation and concentration.

Full programme

Methods based on weak convergence are common in the analysis of nonlinear problems. On e way to describe and quantify the weak convergence of a sequence in a Lebesgue space Lp is via the Young measure it generates. This approcah was introduced by L.C. Young and is particularly useful for problems where only one point statistics is required. In this course we review aspects of weak convergence, develop a theory of Young measures that can account for both oscillation and concentration, and we illustrate it on examples from the calculus of variations.
