Course unit partition: LANGUAGE LABORATORY - ENGLISH

Learning objectives

To learn the basic structure of scientific articles and article types. To learn to read, understand, comment and write a structured abstract. To present and deliver in English the contents to peers, and discuss the contents with peers and teachers.

Prerequisites

Students must have a basic understanding of the written English Language and must know medical vocabulary.

Course unit content

To learn the basic structure of scientific articles and to distinguish different article types. A list of peer-reviewed nursing journals will be delivered. The students must read, understand, comment and learn how to structure an abstract. The contents of abstracts will be delivered to peers, followed by an open discussion with peers and teachers. Students will be encouraged to select papers themselves of particular general interest or related to their thesis. However, the topics, journals and articles will mainly selected by the professors.

Full programme

Original articles and reviews in nursing journals will be used, mainly recent, and thus will change every year. At each lesson different papers will be prepared, and different students will be involved to the delivery of contents to peers and teacher, in order to involve actively students, cover different topics and journal types.

International peer-reviewed nursing journals or journal with topics related to nursing.

Teaching methods

Beforehand the students will be provided with indications how to structure an abstract, based on the articles selected. The students will be subsequently subdivided into small groups and each group will have to read, analyze a paper, write an abstract, and subsequently deliver and discuss its content with all the other groups. The teacher will provide help and suggestions throughout the entire work-up.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam will be written. Each student will be given a short scientific article and will have to reply correctly, in good English, to six-ten open questions relative to the text (comprehension test). Questions will be relative to the article content and methodology.
