Integrated course unit module: CLINICAL MEDICINE

Learning objectives

Acquisition of knowledge and understanding of basic concepts on the process of medical care as compared to the nursing process care; acquisition of knowledge and understanding of the main internal diseases, laboratory and instrumental investigations, therapeutic strategies and tools, and specific aspects of nursing in various conditions. The course has also the objective to provide the students with basic judging on patient condition, with tools for a correct communication on internal medicine issues, and with the basis for further studies.

Course unit content

Aims: to give the student notions on the medical caring process as compared to the nursing activity. Basic knowledge on the most frequent diseases related to internal medicine, on the laboratory and instrumental investigations for diagnostic purposes and principles of therapy. The knowledge of specific notions about the nursing process in each condition.
Detailed program: Comparing nursing and medical care processes. Cardiac and vascular diseases (acute and chronic hearth failure, ischemic hearth disease, hearth arrest and BLS, arythmias, atherosclerosis, endocardial and pericardial diseases); respiratory diseases (acute anc chronic respiratory failure, CAPD, interstitial diseases, asthma, pneumonitis, lung neoplasias); gastroenteric diases (acute anc chronic gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcer, esophagogastric reflux disease, gastroenteric hemorrhages, liver diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases, celiac disease);Comparison between medical care and nursing care processes. Cardiovascular diseases; diseases of respiratory tract and lungs; gastroenterologic diseases.urogenital diseases (acute and chronic renal failure glomerulonephritides, obstructive nephropaties); immune system diseases (immunodeficiencies, neoplastic diseases, autoimmune diseases).

Teaching methods

Lessons with slides and videos and discussion with students. Student practising in groups on simulated clinical cases and final discussion on the conclusion reached.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam on the whole program in one single session with other sections of clinical medicine integrated course. The knowledge and understanding of the subjects included in the program, reasoning capacity on the problems of internal medicine patients, the acquisition of a correct terminology and the possible personal elaboration will be evaluated. Final score results from academic board consultation, based on the grading obtained in each course section.
