Learning objectives

The first part of the course deals with the main physical processes affecting the earth surfaces in order to understand the different climatic condictions affecting the different regions of the earth surface. In the second part of the course the main different methods for maps construction and interpretation and GIS-GRASS methodology are considered and applied.

Course unit content

The Earth shape. The Earth rotation and revolution. Solstices and equinoxes. Sideral and solar day. The structure of the atmosphere. The solar radiation. Air temperature. Atmosphere pressure. The winds and the atmospheric circulation. The atmospheric moisture. Air masses, fronts and middle latitudes cyclones. The Koppen and Strahler climate classifications. The purpose of the second part of the course is the graded learning of the GIS GRASS (Geographical Resources Analysis Support System) an open source pubblic domain system, particularly eligible for an educational use.
