Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, the students acquire the basic knowledge related to design and installation of the main industrial service plants.

Applying knowledge and understanding
The students shall understand the operation of the main service general plants; they shall independently design a service facility (source or generator, distribution network) that meets the requirements of the connected final users in terms of pressure and flow rate. The students shall use the acquired knowledge to analyze and assess the performance of existing installations, to process related numerical data and to take decisions.

Making judgments
The students can critically evaluate and design a service general plant; moreover, they can choose and implement a distribution network of a specific fluid.

Communication skills
The students acquire specific vocabulary relating to industrial service plants. At the end of the course the student shall communicate his knowledge both written and oral, showing his capability of solving numerical problems related to the main topics of the course, by means of commonly used tools such as tables, plants schematics or flowcharts.

Learning skills
Students attending the course will be able to deepen their knowledge in the field of industrial plants by consulting specialized journals or specific literature.

Prerequisites

There are no compulsory prerequisites.

Course unit content

The course provides the students with the general criteria for the design and installation of general services plants. The contents offered during the lectures concern the fluid dynamics analysis of pipes, an overview of the piping components, and the installation criteria. The second part of the course discusses the main service facilities, such as water distribution, technological steam and compressed air.

Full programme

1. FLUID DYNAMIC CIRCUIT: ANALYSIS AND DESIGN
2. THE PIPING
3. INSTALLATION AND PROTECTION OF SERVICE PLANTS
4. HOT WATER DISTRIBUTION PLANTS
5. STEAM PLANTS
6. COMPRESSED AIR PLANTS
