Course unit partition: SURGICAL NURSING

Learning objectives

The nursing course in Specialistic Surgery is part of the course of Clinical Surgery.
The course aims to enable the student to know and to understand the essential elements applied in the field of surgical nursing, and general scientific methods and specific., Also in order to allow the student the ability to use the knowledge and understanding gained assistance in identifying the main problems (including the main maneuvers and instrumental exams connected to the Path Diagnostic-Therapeutic-relief) of patients undergoing surgery specialist.
Learning Outcomes:
The student at the end of the course, using the knowledge of anatomy, biology, physiology, pathology and general psychology previously acquired will need to demonstrate knowledge and understanding about care issues of patients:
• interventions to the chest
• interventions in the digestive tract
• interventions for breast
• major vascular surgery (abdominal aortic aneurysm)
• interventions thyroid
The student also applying the knowledge and understanding acquired, shall be able, even collaborating with other professionals, to prepare a plan of care for patients undergoing these interventions.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and general pathology

Course unit content

The first lessons cover topics of a general nature relating to the pre-operative, such as nursing assessment, informed consent, the patient preparation control documentation and premedication.
The second part of the course is devoted to the discussion of the basic elements of the post-operative care until discharge.
The third part of the course deals with specific topics such as the control of drainage, the ostomy, the venous access, blood transfusions

•Preoperative nursing evaluation
• Informed consent and the right to information
• Preoperative Interventions ( catheter, gastric suction, venous access, etc.)
• Assistance to the preoperative narrow (patient identification, identification of the operative site, patient assessment, documentation control, premedication)
• Assistance in the department and in the immediate postoperative until discharge
• Assistance and prevention of the most common complications
• Type and drainage control
• Type and control ileostomy
• type, care and control of venous access
• Blood transfusion: sending, collection, transport and storage. The nurse's role in blood transfusion. Transfusion reactions

Teaching methods

The assessment of the achievement of the objectives of the course consists of an oral examination. Through questions about the contents of the course will be determined whether the student has achieved the goal of knowledge and understanding of the content. Through questions regarding prevention strategies and preparation of a care plan will be determined whether the student has achieved the aim of applying the acquired knowledge
