Learning objectives

To acquire the theoretical / practical knowledge needed to understand and put into practice the basic techniques to be used in the Pathological Anatomy laboratories, including, among the others: tissue processing for histopatology, sectioning and staining (histochemical, immunohistochemical) of histological slides, sample processing for trasmission electron microscopy, application of ultrastructural and molecular biology techniques to the study of pathological processes

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the basis of histology and having passed all the first year's exams

Course unit content

The course will be mainly focused on the morphologic and molecular techniques applied to the study of pathologic tissues

Full programme

Organization of the histopathology laboratory
Tissue sampling, fixation and processing
Histomorphologic, histochemical and immunohistochemical stainings
Intraoperative frozen sections examination and cryotomy
Instrumentation of the histopathology laboratory
Security and prevention measures
Cytodiagnostic techniques
Cell cultures
Transmission electron microscopy
Molecular biology techniques applied to Pathologic Anatomy (Polymerase Chain Reaction, Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization)

Teaching methods

Frontal teaching and practical laboratory training

Assessment methods and criteria

Final oral exam.
During the course, a number of optional written tests will be administered to the students to test their learning “in itinere”. Results of these tests will be taken into consideration, altogether with the final oral exam, to reach a global evaluation of the student's learning
