Learning objectives
Basic knowledge of mechanisms of tissue damage, response to tissue injury and
their alterations, with particular emphasis on radiation damage. Knowledge of
fundamentals of oncology. Acquisition of terminological competences.
Course unit content
1. Cell death mechanisms; 2. The inflammatory response: signs and phenomena of
acute inflammation, mechanisms of exudate formation, types of exudate,
phagocytosis, chronic inflammation and granulomas, abscesses, ulcers, chemical
mediators of inflammation, fever. 3. Fundamentals of oncology. Nomenclature.
Benign and malign tumors. Causes of tumors. Grading and Staging. 4.
Pathogenetic effects of ionizing radiations: radiosensitivity, radiation damage,
radioresistance mechanisms.
