Learning objectives

The course aims to provide students with some fundamental disciplinary,
theoretical and technical tools for acquiring knowledge related to
Specialised Discourse (English for Specific Purposes, ESP), related to
different text types and to their popularisation, too. Special attention will
be paid to the difference between vocabulary and terminology. The
teaching aims to enable students to achieve the following learning
outcomes:
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: By the end of the module students
will be able to know, identify, present and discuss the main issues of
English for Specific Purposes and popularization, with a particular focus
on the language of law, economics and science.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING, MAKING JUDGEMENTS
and COMMUNICATION SKILLS: By the end of the module students will be
able to analyse lexical, morphosyntactical and stylistic elements of
various text-types and will develop their own critical judgments by using
appropriate descriptive terminology. In their practical work, student will
be using critical and bibliographical tools.
LEARNING SKILLS: By the end of the module, students will be able to use
some bibliographical tools (manuals, dictionaries, websites) concerning the themes of the course, with a particular focus on the language of law, economics and science.

Course unit content

The lectures, held in English, will be organised as follows:
1) Introduction to the popularisation of specialised discourse and its
linguistic and translation strategies.
2) Presentation and analysis of examples of specialised discourse:
The language of the press
Popularisation of the language of science
Popularisation of economic language
Popularisation of legal language and the 'plain English movement'
Specialised translation theory and practice.

Further extracts from a selection of relevant books will be recommended
by the lecturer during the course.

Teaching methods

This is a 30-hour course.
During the lectures, held in English, the lecturer will present the topics
covered by the syllabus. Some practical exercises are planned and active
participation in the lectures is warmly recommended.
Lessons will be livestreamed. Activities and materials will be shared on
Elly.
