Integrated course unit module: LABORATORY ANALYSIS APPLIED TO SPORTS

Learning objectives

Students are expected to know how laboratory data contribute to the characterization of overtraining-dependent tissue damage and of the effects of exercise in diabetic patients

Prerequisites

Adequate bases of biology, anatomy, biochemistry and physiology

Course unit content

Besides the proper recalls of general pathology and immunology, lectures will
concern overtraining-dependent tissue damages and immunodeficiency and the role of exercise in the diabetic patient,
together with the role of laboratory in the monitoring of these conditions.

- Overtraining and its consequences
- Anaphylaxis and Exercise-induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Post-exercise Immunosuppression (PEIS): Mechanisms, consequences, role of nutrition
- The laboratory in the assessment of overtraining and tissue damage
- The laboratory in the assessment of immune function
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Types of Diabetes
- Basic pathophysiology of Diabetes Mellitus
- The metabolic effects of exercise and role of exercise in the management of the T2DM patient
- The laboratory in the management of the diabetic patient

Basics of General Pathology will be found in Maier “Elementi di Patologia generale e Fisiopatologia”, McGraw-Hill
Companies, 2 ed. Other reference material will be indicated and discussed during the lessons and made availble on the Elly platform

Teaching methods

Interactive lessons. The iconographic supports shown during the lessons will be available to students on the Elly platform.

Assessment methods and criteria

Achievements will be verified at the level of the Integrated
Course through an oral exam. One question, chosen in a list discussed during the lessons, will specifically concern the
