Internships

The University of Parma promotes curricular internships in order to facilitate professional choices through direct knowledge of the world of work and the realisation of moments of alternation between study and work.
The curricular internship integrates and completes the student's training pathway through the performance of practical activities which, in accordance with the provisions of the University Regulations of their degree course may be carried out in facilities within the University or externally at qualified public and private organisations with which the University has entered into appropriate agreements.
The internship involves three subjects: the student, the promoter (the University of Parma) and the host (company or organisation) where the activity is carried out under the guidance of a university tutor, a University professor and a company tutor.
The curricular internship does not constitute a prerequisite for an employment relationship between the intern and the host structure, nor can it be a substitute for company labour or professional services.

Arrangements for carrying out and gaining ECTS credits for internship activities

The programme of study for the third year of the first-cycle degree in Natural and Environmental Sciences provides for 6 ECTS credits of internship activities that can be carried out in two alternative ways:
a) 3 ECTS credits of internship (corresponding to 75 hours of activity) that the student can carry out internally at university facilities, externally (at companies, public bodies, public and private laboratories, parks, etc.) or abroad.  The student also carries out the Naturalistic-Environmental Campaign (3 ECTS credits).
b) 6 ECTS credits of internship (corresponding to 150 hours of activity), which the student can carry out internally at university facilities, externally (at companies, public bodies, public and private laboratories, parks, etc.) or abroad.
It is possible to carry out activities related to the realisation of the dissertation in continuity with the internships period, subject to agreement with the reference professor (supervisor) of the dissertation.
The student, before starting any internship activation procedure, must comply with the following requirements:
REQUIREMENTS FOR STARTING THE INTERNSHIP
1 - Having passed all the examinations in the first year and the examinations in Organic Chemistry and Physics (for students in the old curricula who have the Physics examination in their second year of the programme of study).
2 - Having acquired at least 100 ECTS credits (it is preferable to have acquired more, but the professors of reference will express any preferences).
3 - Having certificates of successful completion of the 3 modules of the Workplace Safety Course (or have it recorded in the Academic transcript).

The choice of the facility (university internal laboratory, external laboratory, public or private, institutions, parks, companies, etc.) where the internship is to be carried out must be made sufficiently in advance to allow for the bureaucratic formalities outlined below.

Internal internships

In order to choose where to carry out the internal internships, the student, who is eligible to start it, contacts the laboratory where he/she will carry it out and the professor who will supervise him/her, and agrees on the training project.
Send Prof. Pavesi (company contact person), by e-mail (angelo.pavesi@unipr.it) the Internship/Thesis Application (to be found on the website).
At the same time he/she also sends it, for information (in Cc), to Prof. Donato Antonio Grasso
In the application he/she must indicate:
-the chosen internship (title of the project);
-the name of the professor who will follow the work placement (company tutor=supervisor);
-the agreed start and end date;
-whether the work placement is for 3 ECTS credits or 6 ECTS credits

The application must be accompanied by
-Certification of exams taken (by downloading the programme of study or online Academic transcript)
-Certificates of passing the 3 modules of the Safety Course (NB- only for students who do not have the activity recorded on their Academic transcript)
If the conditions are met, Prof. Pavesi, having asked the tutor professor for confirmation of the data transmitted by the student, will begin the online procedure to start the internships.
Enter the training project indicating the name of the company tutor (who is the supervisor professor chosen by the student).
The student will be notified and must accept the training project, indicating the 'academic tutor' who, in the case of internal internships, must be Prof Pavesi. The academic tutor will accept and the internships will be started.
Students are advised to be very careful not to make a mistake by indicating their supervisor (who has already been entered) as their academic tutor, as this creates an incompatibility situation that may block the placement and, ultimately, its recognition, effectively cancelling it.

At the end of the internal internships:
At the end of the internal internship period, the professor acting as supervisor (company tutor) must notify the academic tutor (Prof. Paves) by e-mail of the assessment of suitability, who will approve the internship and recognise the relevant ECTS credits.
If everything has been done properly, the internship will be registered. It is essential that the student completes the internship evaluation questionnaire at the end of the internship, otherwise the internship cannot be closed.

External internship

For internships outside the University's facilities, students themselves may contact external companies, institutions or laboratories or ask the course professors if they can indicate any availability they are aware of.
A student who has chosen an external body (company) for the internship must make arrangements with the body, then contact a professor of the degree course who is willing to be his/her ACADEMIC TUTOR.
Once the internship has been agreed upon with the institution (or company) and with the academic tutor, the student fills in the Application Form for Internship/Thesis (to be found on the website) and sends it to Prof. Donato Antonio Grasso.
The application must indicate:
-the chosen work placement (title of the project) and the institution/company where it will take place;
-the name of the professor who will be the internal supervisor (academic tutor);
-the agreed start and end date;
-whether the internship is for 3 ECTS credits or 6 ECTS credits
The application must be accompanied by:
-Certification of exams taken (by downloading the programme of study or the online Academic transcript)
-Certificates of passing the 3 modules of the Safety Course (NB- only for students who do not have the activity recorded on their Academic transcript)
If the conditions are met, the internship will be authorised by Prof. Grasso and the organisation (or company) will be able to start the agreement procedures. Once these (which take a few days) have been completed, the organisation (or company) must proceed to enter the placement into ESSE3.
HOW DOES THE BODY OR COMPANY ACTIVATE AN AGREEMENT
The company, if it is not already registered, will register by following the instructions on http://www.unipr.it/tirocini-curriculari-online under 'Procedure for companies' and, having obtained its credentials, will activate the agreement. Once the agreement procedures have been completed, the person in charge of the company (company contact person) will enter the training project indicating the name of the company tutor (the person from the company who will follow the student directly).
The student will be notified and must accept the training project, indicating as academic tutor the university supervisor with whom the student has already made arrangements
At the end of the external internship:
At the end of the external internship period, the company tutor (the person in charge of the student's work at the laboratory or external company) must notify the academic tutor (the professor acting as internal supervisor) by e-mail of the assessment of suitability, who will approve the placement and recognise the relevant ECTS credits.
If everything has been done properly, the internship will be registered. It is essential that the student completes the internship evaluation questionnaire at the end of the internship, otherwise the internship cannot be closed.
