Learning objectives

to provide the basis for the evaluation of the relationship between reactivity and risks associated with the holding and manipulation of chemicals, with emphasis on organic chemicals. Knowledge of the good laboratory procedures for the full personal and workers respect of safety criteria, as well as of the environment. Knowledge of the legislative frame associated with the development of chemical achievements. Students should thus gain a basic knowledge for a correct approach to the manipulation of chemicals, within the frame of the reference legislation and comprehend the language and methods on safety issues.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the Fundamental principles of thermodynamics and kineticsconcepts

Course unit content

• Basic concepts of chemical reactivity: thermodynamic and kinetic general aspects
• Flammable substances and their classification, flammability limits, fire extinguishers and their use. Explosions, incompatible substances (examples)
• Processes at temperature and/or pressure different from ambient. How to handle cylinders, European code for cylinders label. The vacuum.
• Toxicity of chemicals, exposure assessment, NOEL, LD50, LC50, TLV.
• GHS system and safety phrases.
• Carcinogenicity of chemicals, classification according with CCTN, IARC, EPA and NTP.
• DPI and collective protection & prevention devices.
• Information that should be present to label properly a chemical compound.
• Procedure to decommission chemical wastes and non compatibility (some examples)

Second Part
Decree 152/2006 and waste management. Decree 81/2008, chemical risk assessment.

Guided visits to the different types of chemical laboratories (special laboratories, research and teaching labs).
Analysis of the emergency plan of a chemical building.
