Learning objectives
The course aims to provide knowledge on the general characteristics of microorganisms and viruses, their relationships with humans, and the defense mechanisms against infections. This knowledge is a prerequisite for understanding the principles and methods of the laboratory diagnosis of infection. The course aims to provide the student with the ability to apply the knowledge acquired in his / her working environment.

Course unit content
Illustration of the general characteristics of microorganisms and viruses of medical interest, host defense mechanisms against infections, and the principles and methods of the laboratory diagnosis of infection.
Full programme
The resident microbial population in the human organism. Microbial- and virus-host interactions. Host defence mechanisms against infections. Role of innate and adaptive immunity. General information on infectious diseases. General characteristics of infection agents (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses). Methods of infection and transmission of infection agents and pathogenic action mechanisms.
Outline the principles of the laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases.
Methods of collection, transport, and storage of biological samples for the laboratory diagnosis of infection. Methods of direct diagnosis of infection (microscopic examination, culture examination, demonstration of specific antigens and nucleic acids).
