Learning objectives

The course aims to provide students with the basic notions and principles relating to some of the socio-psychological aspects which are involved in the process of care and assistance. At the end of the course students should be able to:

1) understand and address the questions and challenges posed by the promotion of individual and collective health and well-being from a bio-psycho-social perspective;
2) recognize and manage discrimination, prejudices and stereotypical beliefs that limit the effectiveness of the care and assistance process;
3) the ability to relate adequately with the other professionals involved in the assistance processes in a perspective of professional autonomy, collaboration and mutual respect.

Course unit content

The course is part of the Integrated Course of Medical Psychology and Neuropsychovisual Rehabilitation. The course aims to:
a) provide the basic knowledge of the bio-psycho-social model for the assessment and intervention on the individual's state of health/illness.
b) Provide knowledge about social and collective processes related to well-being such as prejudices, stereotypes and discriminations
c) Provide knowledge about group processes such as leadership and interprofessional collaboration.

Teaching methods

The course is organized in frontal lessons, in the classroom, about the subjects of the course; discussion of current events from the point of view of the social psychology.

Lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are not implemented. Supporting material will be available on the specific, student-reserved platform (Elly) and may be include slide presentations and/or audio-video aids

Assessment methods and criteria

Final examination will be written with multiple-choice questions with four choices with one correct answer each. The exam is passed if the student correctly answers 60% of the questions (corresponding with 18/30).
