Learning objectives

The goal of the course is to provide the students with the basic skills to make an experimental activity in the lab on materials for road construction

Prerequisites

It is recommended either to have taken or to attend in parallel the course "Road Construction" of the bachelor program in Civil and Environmental Engineering

Course unit content

The course will provide the students with the practical knowledge to make the most common test to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of materials for road construction.

The course is divided into two parts: the first is the explanation of the testing protocols with examples of the procedures; in the second pard, the students will make the tests directly.

Full programme

The course will face the following topics:
- tests for soil classification
- tests for aggregates classification
- tests on cement-treated mixtures
- tests for bitumen classification
- rheological tests on bitumen
- preparation of hot asphalt mixes
- preparation of cold recycled asphalt mixtures
- mechanical tests on cold recycled asphalt mixtures
- mechanical test on hot asphalt mixes
- performance evaluation of hot asphalt mixtures

There are no books directly related to the course. At the end of the course, the students will receive all the slides used for the lectures

Teaching methods

The course is composed by traditional lectures and by the execution of laboratory test

Assessment methods and criteria

At the end of the course, the students will have to make a report on the tests that they made

Other information

For the practical activities safety shoes and proper clothes for laboratory activities are required
