Learning objectives

The expectation is that, at the end of the module, the student will be able to:

1. Understand the impact of domestic violence on the growth of the sons and daughters who attend it;

2. Recognize the complexity of gender-based violence, whose multiple roots are to be found in psychological and relational elements, family and cultural influences;

3. To develop a capacity to read and analyze the main epidemiological data available in Italy on gender-based violence so as to give the phenomenon a dimension;

4. Understanding how a correct psychological welcome and a path of analysis and support can accompany in change the women who suffered violence and the men who act it.

5. Recognize the contribution that a fair medical-legal assessment can offer to the woman who suffered violence.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites are required.

Course unit content

I lesson
It will be proposed a maieutic workshop based on a narrative text regarding the perception of domestic violence by children who witness it. Short videos on the topic will also be screened. The objective will be focus cultural and social elements concurring to determine or, on the contrary, prevent or deconstruct violence.
The essential contents will be systematized through teacher's slides.

II lesson
We will analyze the most recent national epidemiological data on gender-based violence and we will explore the most common psychological dynamics present in women who suffered violence and in men who perpetrated it, and the way in which the Anti-violence Centers and the Centers for men who use violence intervene. In this regard, we will analyze some video interventions by psychologists working in specific centers.
We will also reflect on the contribution that a correct medico-legal evaluation can offer to the recognition of violence, and on the obstacles that are most frequently faced in this field.

Dedicated page on Elly will be enriched with teaching material and slides supporting the contents of the lessons.

Teaching methods

The methodology will include laboratories starting from narrative texts or short videos, integrated with the systematization of the contents emerged through the illustration of slides.
In the second lesson, a coroner will be present as an external guest.

Assessment methods and criteria

Final written exam with multiple choice quiz on all the modules of the laboratory.
