Integrated course unit module: BASICS OF CLINICAL PATHOLOGY AND FIRST AID

The course aims to allow the student to know, understand and provide first aid.

The lessons concern the issues related to the first aid approach.

Full programme

Lesson 1
The concept of homeostasis. Physiology and pathophysiology of vital functions (cerebral function, respiratory function, cardiac function) and their alterations. Vital signs. Lipothymia and syncope. First aid measures in patients with lipothymia or syncope.

Lesson 2
TIA and stroke: classification, clinical presentation and first aid measures. Acute respiratory failure: causes and main clinical signs. Respiratory
airway obstruction by a foreign body; asthmatic crisis. Related first aid measures.

Lesson 3
Blood pressure measurement: normal values; arterial hypertension. Chest pain: Main characteristics according to etiology. Angina and myocardial infarction. Pulmonary embolism. How to assist a patient with chest pain.

Lesson 4
Shock: classification, main causes, clinical presentation and first aid measures. Cardiac arrest: how to recognize a patient with a cardiac arrest; main
causes of cardiac arrest. Major arrhythmias causing a cardiac arrest: ventricular fibrillation, pulseless ventricular tachycardia, asystole. BLDS: phase description and presentation of explanatory movies.

Lesson 5
Diabetes and its complications. How to recognize and to assist a patient with symptomatic hypoglycemia.

Lesson 6
Lesions occurring in case of a fire-break: burns and smoke poisoning. Related first aid measures. Main clinical consequences in case of contact,
inhalation or ingestion of chemical products. Related first aid measures.

Lesson 7
Lesions occurring in case of exposure to electricity: what to do. Heat shock, hypothermia and freezing: clinical presentations and first aid measures. Different type of wounds; bone fractures. Related first aid measures.

Assessment methods and criteria

The ascertainment of achievement of the Couse objectives will be conducted with the Socratic euristic method, by actively prompting students to explain what they have learned during each lesson. The final exam will be conducted with an oral examination. The questions covering the contents of the course, will verify whether the student has achieved the objective of knowledge and understanding of the content, and whether he or she is able to apply the acquired knowledge
