Learning objectives

The internship (tirocinio), held during the sixth term, together with all the subjects of the study course, contributes to the achievement of the educational targets and practice connected to the profession of the chemist, according to the Dublin Indicators.
The internship, in particular, is pursuing the following targets:

1. Knowledge and understanding. During the internship the knowledge acquired during the different subjects will be reinforced thanks to practice. The knowledge will be especially reinforced in the discipline where the student will choose to carry out his internship (organic, inorganic, analytical, industrial or physical chemistry).
In particular the student will acquire:
- further knowledge on the property and reactivity of the elements and of the main inorganic or coordination compounds;
- further ability to understand and predict correlations between the structure, physical properties and reactivity of chemical compounds;
- further theoretical-practical knowledge of the synthetic methodologies and of the spectroscopic characterisation techniques of chemical compounds;
- further knowledge on techniques of structure characterisation;
- further knowledge of methods of quantitative chemical analysis and of statistical analysis useful for the research and the profession of chemist;
- further knowledge on the correct treatment and manipulation of chemical agents under safe conditions so as of the correct management of the laboratory wastes.
2. Applying knowledge and understanding. The student:
- will be able to carry out stoichiometric calculations and practical procedure for the preparation of solutions at a fixed concentration;
- will be able to use, in safe conditions, chemical substances, and to appropriate dispose them;
- will be able to carry out the synthesis and characterisation of simple chemical compounds by following standard and safe procedures, and by using standard instrumentations;
- will be able to properly collect scientific data by using laboratory measurements and to elaborate and interpret them;
- will be able to correlate the structural to functional properties of molecules and materials.

3. Making judgements. The student
- will be able to critically evaluate, present and discuss the experimental results acquired even in activities carried out in collaboration with other chemists;
- will be able to find and refine a literature search carried out in a chemical database;
- will be able to manage chemicals with safety;
- will be able to understand whether the experimental data collected correlate with a theoretical model.

4. Communication skills. The student:
- will be able to communicate, in oral or written modality, the results of an experimental and professional activity using a rigorous chemical language;
- will be able to interact, communicate with an appropriate language and profitably collaborate with other persons;
- will be able to elaborate and present experimental data also by using multimedia systems;
- will be able to interact with other persons with the aim to fulfil safety procedures and guidelines.

5. Learning skills. The student:
- will be able to work pursuing targets, either in group or independently;
- will be able to interpret, independently, data of the technical and scientific literature, especially concerning the practical fields.

Prerequisites

To access the internship, it is compulsory to gain at least 120 CFU, among which at least 54 CFU of subjects of the 1st year of the course. The student has to apply for the internship to the Didactic Committee of the study course. The internship activity takes usually place during the 2nd semester of the 3rd year of course (6th term). The students that do not acquire the proper credits by that term can postpone the internship.

Course unit content

The internship (9 CFU) consists in an activity, usually experimental, carried out in one of the Parma University laboratory (Internal internship), or in a company or institution in Italy (external internship) or abroad (international internship). It should be of at least 225 hours of activity followed by the production of a concise written report having scientific character.

Teaching methods

The internship takes place under the guidance of the Company Tutor appointed by the Didactic Committee and generally is a theoretical and/or practical activity to be carried out in a chemical laboratory. It follows the production of a written report and of a multimedia presentation that will be discussed and defended during the final examination for the Laurea degree.

Assessment methods and criteria

At the end of the internship, the Company Tutor has to produce to the Academic Tutor a motivated report on the student practical activity. On the basis of this report the Academic Tutor will record online the obtainment of this qualification. The Company Tutor has to certify that the student has completed the time commitment and reached the teaching targets scheduled for the internship activity.

Other information
