Learning objectives
The course aims to allow the student to know how to use some dosimetric quantities in relation to the physical laws concerning the interaction radiation interaction with matter. The course also aims to provide the student the knowledge about the italian legislation on ionizing radiations and radiation protection. The course is also devoted to allow the student to know and correctly use the environmental and personal protection equipment. Peculiar applications and examples will be related to the medical and industrial field. The student will use the gained knowledge and understanding in the daily relationship with the employers, in relation to the risk assessment in the different environments and workplaces.
Prerequisites
Course unit content
The first lessons concern the definition of physical quantities such as Absorbed Dose, Effective Dose, Equivalent Dose and their application, in relation to the interaction of ionizing radiation with matter. This subject is treated in the Health Physics module. The three principles of radioprotection will then be illustrated, starting from a historical poi of view and then framed in the current legislation. Italian Legislation DLgs 101/20 concerning radiation protection. The second part of the course is focused on the presentation of environmental and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) . The last part will concern how different types of radiation detectors as well as personal and environmental dosimeters work.
Full programme
Ionizing radiation risks: external exposure and internal contamination: Outline of the history of radiation protection. Biological effects of ionizing radiation. Teaching methods
The aims of the course will be mostly achieved with lectures, but also with practical exercises. During class students are engage through the use of spreadsheets and applets.
The lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are not implemented. Supporting material will be available on the specific, student-reserved platform (Elly) and will include slide presentations, audio-video aids or video-recording of the lectures.
The online learning platform (Kahoot) will also be used. With Kahoot it is possible to create quizzes ideal for teaching, both remotely and face-to-face, integrating digital in the lessons.
Assessment methods and criteria
The achievement of the course aims is proofed by a written examination.
Students could also take the oral exam, if it is required.
In case of the persistence of the health emergency, the exams will be conducted remotely, as follows:
remote quizzes, through the Elly platform and Teams platform (guide http://selma.unipr.it/).
In this case the test consists of 30 multiple choice /multiple answer questions on the course contents (reference texts + documents uploaded to Elly during the course). There is no penalty for incorrect answers.
Students with SLD / BSE must first contact Le Eli-che: support for students with disabilities, D.S.A., B.E.S. (https://sea.unipr.it/it/servizi/le-eli-che-supporto-studenti-con-disabilita-dsa-bes).
Using questions about the contents of the course it will be determined whether the student has achieved the goal of knowledge and understanding of content about Italian legislation as well as about the most important dosimetry radiation Units Through questions it will be determined whether the student has also achieved the aim of applying the knowledge acquired to comprehension of environmental and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as well as of radiation dosimeters.
