Integrated course unit module: HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY AND THE VISUAL SYSTEM

Learning objectives

To provide a quite detailed knowledge of the physiology of the visual system and of the oculomotor one.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of anatomo-physiological features of the nervous system. Basic knowledge of the physiology of the nerve cell. Subject of teaching of the part of the course relating to general physiology.

Course unit content

Anatomo-Physiological aspects of retina, visual pathways and of cortical visual areas and of the cerebral structures for controlling eye movements.

Full programme

Basic notes on eye anatomy. Structure of retina and phototransduction process. Characteristics of ganglionic cells. Anatomy of visual pathways. Magnocellular and parvocellular pathways. Deficits following damage of visual pathways. Structure and function of primary visual cortex. High prder visual pathways. Perception of motion, depth, shape and color. Visual Attention. Visual agnosia. Subcortical and cortical control of the various typologies of eye movements. Ocular reflexs.

Bibliography

Chapters on the visual system, from "Principal of Neural Science. of Kandel, Schwartz and Jessel.". or "Essentials of Neural Science and Behavior of of Kandel, Schwartz and Jessel."

Teaching methods

The course will be held through lectures to Students either in the classroom (“in presenza”) or in synchronous-streaming (“in telepresenza”) on the Teams platform. Therefore, the opportunity of Student/Teacher interaction will be preserved both face to face and remotely, by the simultaneous use of the Teams platform.
Lectures may be supported by slide presentations, which will be available to students on the Elly platform (https://elly.medicina.unipr.it).

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam, the exam will be held simultaneously with the other two parts of the course. Knowledge of at least one topic will be assessed for each of the three parts of the integrated course.
