Learning objectives

The Integrated Course of Audioprostheses VI (3rd year-2nd semester of the CdS in Audioprosthetic Techniques) provides the following teaching modules:
the Audiology VI module aims to allow the student to know and understand the essential elements of implantable prostheses in the auditory rehabilitation of severe transmission, mixed and / or neurosensory hearing losses that can not benefit from traditional hearing aid. The student must acquire the ability to use knowledge and understanding in order to identify the audiological indications and contraindications, to interpret the relative path of electrophysiological verification / regulation and of audiological adaptation and auditory rehabilitation.
The module of Otorhinolaryngology IV aims to allow the student to know and understand the essential elements of the main neoplastic pathologies of the ponto-cerebellar angle, in particular the Acoustic Neurinoma and Neurofibromatosis 2. The student must acquire the ability to use knowledge and understanding in the use of different audiometric methods in order to offer a correct instrumental diagnostics. Furthermore, the ability to use knowledge and understanding must enable the student to orientate himself in the indications and management of the Auditory Implant at the Encephalic Trunk.
The module of Applied Medical Sciences aims to allow the student to know and understand the essential elements of the audiological adaptation of the acoustic prosthesis. The student must acquire the ability to use knowledge and understanding in the audiological adaptation of digital hearing aids.

Course unit content

The Integrated Course of Audioprostheses VI has the following contents:
The teaching of Audiology VI includes the implantable prostheses as the main topic. The different types of implantable prostheses, their components and their functioning are first described; therefore the indications, contraindications and the selection procedure for the patients are analyzed; some hints of surgical technique are explained; then the electrophysiological verification / regulation procedures of implantable prostheses are treated; the lessons conclude with elements of audiological adaptation.
The IV Otolaryngology Course aims to address the fundamental aspects of the audiological instrumental diagnosis and of the possible prosthetic rehabilitation in the neoplastic pathology of the ponto-cerebellar angle.
The topics of the lessons are therefore mainly addressed to the study of acoustic neuroma and neurofibromatosis 2, as well as to the other neoplastic pathologies of the ponto-cerebellar angle. The second part of the course is dedicated to the treatment of the hearing system to the brain trunk, describing its characteristics of functionality, indications, intra and post-operative electrophysiological strategies.
The Course of Applied Medical Technical Sciences aims to investigate the aspects of the audiological adaptation of the acoustic restoration, in particular, in severe / severe hearing loss and in pediatric prosthesis. The digital technology of hearing aids is deepened

Teaching methods

The oral lessons provide for the presentation in video-projection of the contents with the help of documentation of particular audiological and clinical aspects. The last minutes of the lesson are reserved for students' questions of clarification. Discussion of emblematic clinical cases is expected.
Exercises in the Audioprosthetic laboratory and verification of prosthetic adaptation, through specific programs for the regulation of digital hearing aids.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of learning and acquired knowledge takes place during the calls provided by the teaching calendar, by means of an oral question, in the presence of the Teachers Committee of the Integrated Course of Audioprostheses VI. The student must be able to demonstrate the knowledge on implantable prostheses, on the audiological indications and related audiological adaptation, in the different clinical pictures of hearing loss. It must also know the fundamental elements of the main neoplastic pathologies of the ponto-cerebellar angle and above all have the knowledge and understanding to formulate a precise audiological instrumental diagnostic plan. It must also demonstrate that it has learned the fundamental elements that characterize the Auditory Implant at the Encephalic Trunk from the audiological and electrophysiological point of view.

Other information

Lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are not implemented. Supporting material will be available on the specific, student-reserved platform (Elly) and will include slide presentations, audio-video aids or video-recording of the lectures.
