To provide a quite detailed knowledge of the visual system
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of anatomo-physiological features of the nervous system. Basic knowledge of the physiology of the nerve cell.
Course unit content
Anatomo-Physiological aspects of retina, visual pathways and of cortical visual areas and of the cerebral structures for controlling eye movements.
Full programme
Basic notes on eye anatomy. Structure of retina and phototransduction process. Characteristics of ganglionic cells. Anatomy of visual pathways. Magnocellular and parvocellular pathways. Deficits following damage of visual pathways. Structure and function of primary visual cortex. High prder visual pathways. Perception of motion, depth, shape and color. Visual Attention. Visual agnosia. Subcortical and cortical control of the various typologies of eye movements. Ocular reflexs.
