Learning objectives

1- Knowledge and understanding:
Systematic description of regional anatomy and morphology of head and neck, with a clinical-oriented approach
2- Applying knowledge and understanding
students are expected to be able to describe the structure of head and neck regions, to be able to utilized his/her anatomical bases to identify the different structures of a region in a clinical oriented manner. Knowledge must be applied to simple clinical reasoning (i.e. case studies)
3- Making judgements:
students are expected to be able to develop an anatomical-based thinking
4-Communication skills
Students are expected to use a proper anatomical language

Prerequisites

Human anatomy and histology

Course unit content

Classes will be focused on Human Topographical Anatomy of the Head and Neck, with an emphasis on anatomical region of special interest for clinical and surgical implications.

Full programme

Introduction to human topographical anatomy. Fascia. Cranial and facial
region, lateral aspect of the head, temporal and infratemporal region, pterygopalatine
fossa, orbital region, nasal region, mental region, buccal region, oral
region, oropharynx space, parotid and submandibular region, regions of
the neck (neck triangles), supra and infrahyoid neck spaces.

Teaching methods

Interactive class lectures. Power point slide will be projected and uploaded weekly on “Elly” platform. Slides will be available for Dental Students only (“5027 - ODONTOIATRIA E PROTESI DENTARIA”). Atlas and anatomical models will be utilized too, and, whenever possible, anatomical dissection will be set up. Anatomical rooms with anatomical models will be available for individual learning

Assessment methods and criteria

The achievement of the above described learning objective will be verified by an oral exam on a region of the head and neck. Communicative skills will be assessed too. The result will be announced immediately after
