Learning objectives

At the end of the class, the student should be able to:
-Knowledge and understanding the fundamentals of classical chemical analysis
-Understanding the reason why a particular laboratory instrumentation is used as well as standard operative procedures
- applying both from the theoretical and practical point of view, selected analytical official methods used in water analysis
- making judgement about their own results of laboratory activity, by using a proper evaluation of repeatability and a comparison of label data of commercial bottled water.
- communicating the results of their own laboratory activity by writing a laboratory notebook in which personal observation should be reported

Prerequisites

Knowledge of General ad Inorganic Chemistry (1st year 1st semester)

Course unit content

Analytical principles of thermodynamics of the chemical
equilibria, homogeneous and heterogeneous equilibria, distribution functions,
calculations about equilibrium concentrations. Activity and concentration.
Solubility of ionic compounds, solubility product, effect of the common ion.
Fractioned precipitation by pH control. Partitioning equilibria. Analytical
principles of redox equilibria, potentials of the galvanic cells. Complex formation equilibria,
chelates, distribution diagrams for complexation equilibria. Interaction between
solubility, protonation, complexation, redox and partitioning equilibria.
Applications in the recognition and separation of cations and anions, reactivity
tests in the classical qualitative analysis. Principles of quantitative analysis.
Principles and applications of volumetric analysis. Acid-base titrations,
precipitation titrations, redox titrations, complexometric titrations. Principles
and applications of gravimetric analysis.

Teaching methods

lectures and exercises (4 credits);
laboratory activities (2 credits)
To be admitted to the Laboratory the student should attend at least 50% of the theory lessons. The laboratory attendance is compulsory for at least 80% of the scheduled time. All the updated information are available on a slide published in ELLY

Assessment methods and criteria

written and verbal examination. To be admitted to the trials the student must: attend theory (50%) and laboratory class (80%), to attend the last laboratory lesson in which result will be evaluated and deliver the laboratory notebook.
