Learning objectives

At the end of the course students will be able to (a) understand the indications for and (b) know how to plan a program of assistance on the professional orthoptist to Assistant in Ophthalmology, regarding clinical cases dealt with.

Course unit content

Cataract surgery: pre-operative indications and patient’s evaluation. Basics of surgical technique for cataract removal in adults and children. Basicsof optical correction of aphakic eyes (IOLs, contact lenses, spectacles).
Glaucoma surgery: pre-operative indications and patient’s evaluation. Basics of glaucoma surgical techniques (trabeculectomy, non penetrating surgery, goniotomy, trabeculotomy, implants and setons, cyclodestruction). Follow-up criteria.
Corneal surgery: penetrating keratoplasty and lamellar keratoplasty (with particular attention to keratoconus), refractive surgery in myopia (indications, pre-operative evaluation, medico-legal aspects).
Retinal surgery: basics of episcleral surgery and vitrectomy. Evaluation and treatment of possible ortoptic complications of retinal surgery.
Squint surgery: pre-operative evaluation, surgical techniques, post-operative follow up.

Teaching methods

Lectures and practices. Students freqeunteranno the operating sessions of the UOC Az of Ophthalmology, University Hospital of Parma (Dir. Prof. Gandolfi), during which observe surgeries and ocular adnexal orbital, and discuss individual cases with clinical lecturers and tutors.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam. The examination will focus on the content of the course, and the student will be asked to deal with simulations of elementary clinical situations concerning indications and management of patients undergoing eye surgery.
