Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding:
At the end of the course, student will have gained a basic literacy programs relating to the main computer designed for the proper management of project drawings, refining the understanding of rationale underlying the computerized design, in relation to experience of traditional design already carried out in Design course, to identify the most frequently used commands and create your own custom modus operandi.

Skills:
At the end of the course, student will have developed the ability to use independently the main computerized drawing program, Autocad, in order to represent properly technical drawings two-dimensional and three-dimensional design.

Making judgments:
On passing the exam, student should have developed the ability to critically evaluate the application of different drawing techniques applied to computerized representation of a building.

Communication skills:
On passing the exam, the student should have acquired sufficient property of graphic language, at least as far as communication skills expressed through proper use of programs used in teaching.

Learning skills:
Workshop activities, together with final work required, are designed to introduce students to the latest developments in terms of using a drawing program and computerized graphics final processing: the student should have acquired knowledge and base skills of the discipline to address hereafter, a study of these aspects indipendently.

Prerequisites

Having already sat the Design exam is recommended as preparation.

Course unit content

In detail, the communication studies will be structured as follows: The basic principles of Autocad: the concept of scale; the concept of working on multiple levels (from which the creation of a prototype design using several layers), attributes of layers (colour, line type, etc.); to draw a line without points of reference (ortho ON and ortho OFF); the display within Autocad.
To draw the fundamental entities (points, lines, polylines, arcs, circles, etc.) using the coordinates of Autocad; angles in Autocad; Object Snap; graphic shading. Query the designed entities: the List and Distance commands. Some of the commands can act to modify design entities: delete, copy, move, offset, couple, top, mirror, wheel series alignment, stretch, scale, size, extend, exploded (view). Dimensioning in AutoCAD.
Write with Autocad. Change the attributes of designed entities: change properties, modify text.
Composition and setting a drawing.
Drawing of a plan on the prototype file.
Drawing up an elevation and a section. The dimensioning in Autocad.
Printing with Autocad. Creating file. Ctb.
Notes on most three-dimensional drawing commands.
Editing: notes on the use of Photoshop for drawings’ layout.

Teaching methods

The laboratory of digital design will be held at the Laboratories for Basic Computer Science at the Engineering didactic centre and will include communication studies designed to provide basic knowledge on the use of computer tools directed toward graphic restoration of designs.
Because of their wide variety, the choice of software with which to perform the exercises has fallen to the AutoCAD for Windows, in the versions available in the Basic IT Laboratories of the department.
During the tutorials, the basic concepts and essential commands will be explained so that it will be possible to proceed with the realisation of any type of two-dimensional or three-dimensional design.
These exercises will be verified with the assignment of a graphic exercise to be carried out and made possible through the acquired concepts.
At the end of CAD laboratory, students will be required to realise an exercise that envisions the application of learned concepts relating to the principal Design programme commands used, as well as the principles of construction representation on different scales, finalised to the representation in an urban framework of a building (agreed with the teacher and already drawn in Design course) in the context on a scale of 1:1,000 /1:500, in addition the design of the plans, elevations, sections, axononometry and a perspective of a building or a complex of buildings, previously agreed upon with the professor and common to the Design course.
The building elements must be represented on different scales of representation and are to be composed on a single graphic drawing in A1 format (84 x 59.4 cm), horizontally positioned; the final printing scale of the plans, elevations and sections must be 1:100, in consequence of which the level of definition of the designs must be congruent with the chosen scale; the levels of graphic special-purpose language will be, however, provided by the faculty.
The prototype file to be used as a reference and any other material on digital format are available on the website:

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation will be done through an examination of the drawings made with the chosen drawing tool computerized and used during the course.

Prepare projects 75% divided as follows
Explanation of theoretical aspects (knowledge)
Graphic applications (competence)
Autonomous choice of representation mode
(Judgement)

Oral examination 25% divided as follows
Theoretical questions (knowledge)
Graphic applications (competence)
Properties of exposure (communication skills)
