Learning objectives

Knowledge and ability to understand
• Acquire basic knowledge of pharmacology, use of drugs and correlation between dose, therapeutic effect and undesirable effects

Applied knowledge
• Design an appropriate therapeutic drug monitoring

Autonomy of judgment
• Being able to evaluate the limits and the meaning of the analysis performed

Communication
• Inform the doctor and patient about the limits and the significance of the therapeutic monitoring of the drug carried out
Ability to learn
• Provide the tools to deepen the problems related to the use of drugs and their monitoring

General information about drugs, their classification and dispensing methods
General pharmacology.
Pharmacokinetic: adsorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion.
Therapeutic window
Generalities on antibiotics, digoxin, theophylline, antiepileptic, chemotherapeutic and immunosuppressive drugs
Therapeutic monitoring of antibiotics (aminoglycosides, vancomycin), digoxin, theophylline, antiepileptics (ethosuximide, lamotrigine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, valproate), antineoplastics (busulfan, methotrexate) and immunosuppressive drugs (cyclosporine, tacrolimus)
Emergency-and-overdose-drug-testing: paracetamol, salicylates
Non-depolarizing neuromuscular blockers and BChE dosage
organophosphate e AChE dosage

Socratic heuristic oral lessons accompanied by informal and optional in itinere tests

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral examination.
For the determination of the final mark the following descriptors are adopted:
• knowledge and understanding of the subjects (up to 12/30);
• ability to apply the knowledge (up to 10/30);
• ability to communicate the learned knowledge and skills in verbal form through the appropriate use of the techinical language (up to 8/30).
