Learning objectives

The main goals of the tuition are:
1. knowledge of the basic concepts of atomic theory and chemical bonding;
2. knowledge of the properties of elementary substances and major organic compounds;
3. knowledge and being able to apply knowledge of aqueous solutions, concentrations, acid/base behavior and pH;
4. knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of macromolecules of biological interest.

Prerequisites

Course unit content

Basic principles of General Chemistry, atomic theory and chemical bonding; chemical reactions and their properties. Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry, macromolecules of biological interest.
Particular attention will be paid to topics related to laboratory activities.

Full programme

Atom, chemical bond and interactions. Properties of solutions and concentration units, stoichiometric calculations. Acids and bases; calculating the pH of various aqueous solutions; buffer solutions. Basic principles of Organic Chemistry. Main characteristics of the following compounds: hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives, amines. Macromolecules of biological interest: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleotides and nucleic acids.

Bibliography

"Biochimica essenziale con richiami di Chimica Generale e Chimica Organica" di G. D'Andrea. Editore EdiSES.

"Chimica & Biochimica" di M. Stefani e N. Taddei. Editore Zanichelli.

Teaching methods

Lectures will be held on-site. Supporting material will be available on the specific, student-reserved platform (Elly).

Assessment methods and criteria

Written test with open-ended and multiple-choice questions (30 questions). The time allotted for the execution of the test is 60 minutes. This grade and that of Biochemistry are averaged to produce the final grade of the course. The final grade is notified through Esse3 platform.

Students with special educational needs (S.L.D.) may contact Centro di Accoglienza e Inclusione dell'Ateneo (cai@unipr.it).
