Learning objectives

The teaching aims to provide the student with the basics of classical mechanics and electromagnetism. These notions, also illustrated through a suitable number of examples, should enable him to set up and solve simple problems and to understand some fundamental properties of matter, deriving from the laws studied.
In particular
Knowledge and understanding
- know and understand the terminology used in the field of mechanics and electromagnetism
- knowledge of the fundamental laws and natural principles that govern mechanics and electromagnetism.
- knowledge of strategies aimed at finding specific solutions to simple mechanical and electromagnetism problems.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- resolution of simple problems both analytically and numerically concerning the mechanics of point and extended bodies and electromagnetism.
Communication skills
- development of a correct, rigorous and comprehensible scientific language that allows the knowledge and resolutive strategies learned in teaching to be presented clearly and completely.
Making judgments
- ability to critically evaluate the results obtained in carrying out the problems.
- ability to make simple appropriate observations and possible descriptions in concrete situations close to those covered in the teaching.
Learning skills
- ability to apply the knowledge acquired for the resolution of original problems inherent in mechanics and electromagnetism

Prerequisites

Some basics of Mathematical Analysis
In particular, operational knowledge of basic trigonometry, equations and systems of first and second degree equations, exponentials and logarithms, real variable functions, limits, derivatives and integrals.
Part of the teaching is devoted to the simple notions of vector calculus needed.

Bibliography

The notes of the lectures along with exercises will be available to students on Elly platform. In addition students may study the topics of the course on General Physics textbooks. Any University Physics level textbook (for Degree in Engineering or Physics) can be considered valid for the purpose of preparation. Some suggested textbooks:

Gettys - 2 Volumes
Physics 1
Physics 2
McGraw Hill

Physics for Scientists and Engineers, vol. 1 e 2 di Raymond A. Serway, John W. Jewett

Walker - Halliday-Resnick-Fondamenti di Fisica - CEA Settima Edizione – 2 Volumi
(vol. primo - Meccanica - Termologia)
(vol. secondo – Elettromagnetismo-Ottica)

Teaching methods

Attending lectures is highly recommended. Many examples will be discussed during the course. Exercise sessions will be held during the course. Thanks to a special Program called IDEA, additional sessions of exercises will be provided by a tutor.

Generally, all students are expected to check on the platform Elly the available material and the indications provided by the instructor.

Assessment methods and criteria

Two written partial tests of which the first one during the year (duration ca. 1h) or written test on the whole program alternatively (duration ca. 1h).
Written tests will present both numerical or literal exercises and theoretical questions.
With a total score equal or above 18/30 you will have the opportunity to immediately accept the proposed mark.

Other information

Relevant documents are distributed via the platform ELLY.
