Learning objectives

Knowledge and ability to understand:
At the end of the course, the student must have acquired theoretical and practical knowledge to develop rainfall-runoff and flood propagation numerical models.
Skills:
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- calculate the discharge hydrograph of a catchment by means concentrated and semi-distributed rainfall-runoff models.
- to study the propagation of a flood wave in a river by means of a 1D hydraulic model.

Autonomy of judgment:
the student should be able to independently develop a hydrological model of a particular catchment and analyse the results of other models.
Communication skills:
The student will have sufficient language ownership regarding the specific technical terminology and must be able to present the obtained results using graphs, tables and texts in a clear and effective way.

Course unit content

The course should provide the necessary knowledge to construct modern rainfall-runoff and flood propagation models by means of most well-established software. The course is the follow-up of the hydrology course from which it gathers some of the fundamental concepts.

Full programme

Lessons:
-Modelli afflussi – deflussi di piena e continui con particolare rifermento al Modello di Clark, definizione dei concetti di modelli concentrati semi-distribuiti e distribuiti.
Rainfall-Runoff numerical models both lumped and distributed
Parameter estimation for rainfall-runoff models
Muskingum method for flood propagation
Flood propagation models based on numerical integration of De Saint-Venant Equations
Roughness calibration
Use of Geographical Information System (GIS) to create 1D model’s geometry of flood propagation model
Tutorials:
Rainfall-runoff models creation and calibration by means of HEC-HMS code
1D flood propagation model creation and calibration by means of HEC-RAS code

Teaching methods

The course is organized into a series of lessons conducted with the help of powerpoint slides. Moreover, exercises will be orgainzed using Hec-Ras and Hec-Hms numerical models. The teacher will provide the support needed to prepare the final project through a series of on-going reviews

Assessment methods and criteria

The student must develop a project and terminate it independently by a writing a report. Once the project has been marked by the teacher, the student can take the oral examination on all the topics discussed in the lesson and tutorials
