The admission procedures are decided annually by the Department Council, upon proposal of the Course Council, and are published in the University of Parma’s Study Manifest.

Curricular requirements and knowledge required for access

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the degree program, candidates must meet specific curricular requirements and have adequate knowledge of the English language.

Curricular Requirements

  •  To be admitted to the degree program, candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in Chemical Sciences and Technologies (L-27) or in Applied Pharmaceutical Sciences (L-29), or equivalent foreign qualifications according to current regulations.
  • Graduates holding a bachelor's degree in other fields of study may also access the program, provided they have completed at least the following in their academic career:
    • 6 ECTS in basic subjects in mathematics, physics, informatics, and statistics,
    • 12 ECTS in basic chemical subjects (organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry),
    • 14 ECTS in core chemical subjects (organic chemistry, fermentation chemistry, food chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical technologies, biochemistry, chemical-quantitative analysis, applied analytical chemistry).

The ECTS must have been earned through courses, not through thesis and/or internship projects.

  • For graduates holding foreign degrees, or degrees from systems that do not have ECTS or hold other qualifications, the verification of curricular requirements will be made by comparing the contents and commitments of the courses attended with the expected program structure.

For candidates mentioned in points 2 and 3, the verification of the curricular requirements will be carried out by the Admission Committee.
To fill any gaps, candidates may also enroll in individual courses and take the respective exams, receiving proper certification, for a maximum of 30 ECTS, prior to enrollment.

Language Proficiency

Adequate knowledge of the English language is satisfied by one of the following conditions:

  • Having passed an English language exam with a minimum level of B2 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment - CEFR) as part of the first-degree program or in subsequent certified university training activities;
  • Holding an official B2-level certificate issued by an organization accredited by the Ministry of Education (MUR);
  • Having obtained a first-level degree officially taught in English.

Admission procedures

The degree program allows free access.

The admission procedures are decided annually by the Department Council, upon proposal of the Degree Program Council, and published in the University of Parma’s Study Manifesto.

To successfully attend the degree program, adequate preparation in basic and applied chemical disciplines is required, as well as sufficient knowledge of the English language (level B2 or higher).

Access to the degree program is subject to the verification of:

  • the fulfillment of curricular requirements,
  • the adequacy of personal preparation.

The verification of personal preparation is always required and distinct from the verification of curricular requirements.

The assessment of curricular requirements is automatic for candidates holding Italian qualifications that meet the criteria, while in all other cases, it will be carried out by a special Admission Committee, which is appointed annually by the Course President and typically consists of the President and at least two other faculty members of the program.

Verification of the Adequacy of Personal Preparation

The verification of personal preparation is always required, is distinct from the fulfillment of curricular requirements, and is the responsibility of the Admission Committee.

The verification of personal preparation is considered fulfilled for candidates who meet the curricular requirements outlined in points 1 and 2 of the section "Curricular Requirements and Knowledge Required for Access" and who have obtained a graduation grade of 88/110 or higher, or an equivalent. If the graduation grade is below 88/110, an interview will be required to assess the personal preparation.

For candidates who have not yet graduated, the verification will be carried out by calculating the average grade obtained and, if necessary, a subsequent interview.

For non-EU candidates who are not residents and hold a foreign qualification, the verification of personal preparation will involve the creation of a merit-based ranking, unless international agreements specify a different entry procedure.

The Admission Committee, which will evaluate the curricula and personal preparation, will also indicate which subject areas (SSD) may show any educational gaps that need to be addressed prior to enrollment.
