Thesis/Final examination

The final examination consists of the discussion of a thesis/dissertation prepared by the candidate. The student has the availability of 18 ECTS credits for the preparation of the thesis at university clinical or biological facilities and at affiliated healthcare facilities. This activity is referred to as 'Graduation Internship'. A student wishing to undertake a Graduation Internship at a given establishment must submit a formal request to the Director of that establishment together with his or her curriculum (list of examinations taken and marks obtained in each of them, list of optional activities followed, internships in laboratories or clinics or any other activity carried out for training purposes). The Director of the facility, having heard the professors/instructors pertaining to the facility and having checked the availability of places, grants the request and entrusts a tutor with the responsibility of monitoring and certifying the activities carried out by the student in the facility.

Characteristics of the final examination

The dissertation consists of a written paper (in Italian or English) following the methodologies of a scientific report.

The dissertation, drafted in an original manner, concerns topics relevant to the characterising aspects of the degree course and must be prepared independently by the graduating student, under the supervision of a Supervisor; a Tutor may be envisaged. The treatment of the topic, agreed with the professor/instructor, must be thorough and comprehensive, and express an ability to work independently and organise experimental and/or bibliographical material.
The contents of the thesis are presented to the Degree Committee, appointed in accordance with the University's Teaching Regulations; the Committee, after approving the thesis, proceeds to award the grade iout of 110.

The average of the marks obtained in the curricular examinations, the assessment of the thesis during discussion and the assessment of other activities, if any, in the manner determined by the Degree Council contribute to determining the final grade. The degree examination is deemed passed with a minimum mark of 66/110. If the candidate obtains top marks, honours may be awarded. Degree examinations are public and the proclamation takes place at the end of the evaluation work carried out by the Commission.
Pursuant to Decree Law No. 18 of 17 March 2020, obtaining a degree qualifies one to practise as a surgeon, subject to obtaining a pass mark in the qualifying practical-assessment internships (tot. 15 ECTS credits).

Conduct of the final examination

The final examination for a Degree in Medicine and Surgery consists of the preparation and discussion of a written dissertation (in Italian or English), prepared independently by the graduating student on a subject falling within one of the disciplines included in the programme of study, under the supervision of a Supervisor and, if necessary, a Tutor.

The degree examination normally takes place in July, October and March of each academic year.
The Graduation Committee:

a) is appointed by the Director of the Department of Medicine and Surgery, on the recommendation of the Course President;

b) is made up of a minimum of five members, the majority of whom must be tenured Professors, or Researchers (including those on fixed-term contracts), who hold teaching positions;

c) is chaired by the Course President, or his/her delegate.

The President of the Committee is responsible for ensuring that the examination is conducted in full compliance with the rules; the President also appoints a secretary from among the members of the Committee to be responsible for recording the proceedings of the final examination.
The graduating student must make his or her copy of the thesis available to the Graduation Committee, which he or she will collect at the end of the proclamation.
The candidate gives an oral presentation, using computer aids, drawing the appropriate conclusions, on which the Commissioners' discussion opens.

The slides prepared by the candidate should illustrate:
- presentation of the topic;

- Materials and Methods (including statistical analysis);

- Results;

- Conclusions and possible future perspectives.

The maximum time available is 10 minutes.
At the end of the presentations, the Graduation Committee secretly discusses and decides on the final mark, which is expressed out of 110, irrespective of the number of members on the Committee.

The final grade is determined by: the (unweighted) average of the marks obtained in the curricular examinations, the assessment of the thesis during discussion and the possible assessment of other activities (participation in international exchange projects; involvement in national or international voluntary activities of a social-health nature), in accordance with the procedures laid down by the Degree Council.

The degree examination is deemed to have been passed with a minimum mark of 66/110. If the candidate obtains the highest mark (110/110), honours may be awarded with the unanimous opinion of the committee.
Degree examinations are public and the proclamation takes place at the end of the evaluation work carried out by the Commission.
