Course organisation

The duration of the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery is six years; according to the regulations in force, the teaching of the Degree Course is normally organised for each year in two coordinated cycles of less than one year's duration: the cycles, conventionally referred to as semesters, begin in October and March, respectively, and have a total duration of at least 28 weeks. To obtain the degree, the student must have acquired 300 ECTS credits; in addition, specific professional skills in the fields of internal medicine, general surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, laboratory medicine, skin and venereal diseases and medical-surgical specialities must be achieved by carrying out professional training activities lasting no less than 60 ECTS credits.
Classrooms, laboratories and services This complex organisation of teaching requires not only a great deal of commitment and availability on the part of the teaching staff and researchers of the degree course, but also a considerable deployment of classrooms, facilities and services that the Department of Medicine and Surgery is equipped with, or has planned to develop and expand.
A teaching facility is located at the 'Aule Nuove' in Via Gramsci, 14, and other classrooms, laboratories, outpatient clinics and ward activities are located at the University Hospital, so that each year of the course has the necessary service spaces.
The Bio-tech Complex in Via Volturno, 39, houses the Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics and Morphology laboratories.
There are also tutoring rooms (small group teaching) and ample space for individual study.
Internship: this is a compulsory tutorial activity that involves the student in carrying out practical activities with a large degree of autonomy, simulating the activity carried out at a professional level.
At each stage of the internship, the student is required to work under the direct supervision of a professor/instructor-tutor. The clinical competence acquired through professional training activities is subject to assessment, in a manner determined by the Degree Council, and is expressed in a mark out of 30.
The Degree Council may identify non-university care facilities at which the internship may be conducted, in part or in full, after evaluation and accreditation of their teaching suitability.
Final examination: it consists of the discussion of a thesis/dissertation prepared by the candidate.
