Integrated course unit module: Laboratory Medicine & Immunogenetics

Learning objectives

The student should (1) know the most commonly prescribed laboratory
analyses in clinical pathology, (2) understand their role in diagnostic
procedures, follow up and therapy monitoring, (3) properly evaluate their
cost/benefit ratio and (4) apply this information to relevant clinical
examples.

Prerequisites

Mandatory propedeutic examinations are defined by the Course Council.
Relevant bases of Biochemistry, Physiology, Immunology and General Pathology should be adequately recalled

Course unit content

The first lessons cover general topics regard to biological materials and
preparation of the patient.
The second part of the course covers the main laboratory tests, in
relation
to the work activity.
The following issues will be addressed:
- The laboratory in hematology.
- Laboratory evaluation of hemostasis.
- Systemic parameters of
inflammation
- Bases of immunopathology: Ipersensibility I type and Immunodeficiencies.

Full programme

A) Clinical pathology in hematology:
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Anemia (sideropenic, of chronic disease, aplastic; sideroblastic, B12 and
folate deficiency; hemolytic)
- Hemoglobinopathies
- Disorders of white blood cells
- Disorders of iron metabolism
- Lymphoproliferative and myeloproliferative disorders
B) The laboratory in hemostasis:
- Bleeding disorders: alterations of primary and secondary hemostasis
- Thromboembolic disease and thrombophilia
- DIC
- Monitoring of anticoagulant therapies
C) Inflammation and immunity:
- ESR and acuta phase proteins
- Complement, cytokines and chemokines
- Antibodies
- Cellular immunity
D) Bases of immunopathology:
- Autoimmune diseases
- Immunodeficiency
- IgE-mediated hypersensitivity

The slides used during the lectures will be made available on the Elly Platform.

Teaching methods

The course will be performed through interactive lectures in front of the
students, with the aid of illustrative material that, at the end of the course, will be made available to students on Elly site at the pages of the course.
Lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, if further instructions are not implemented.
During the lessons we will discuss the issues related to laboratory tests and their interpretation topic will be exposed, encouraging students to ask questions on the basis of references that will be provided.

Assessment methods and criteria

Verification tests in progress will not be carried out.
The assessment of the achievement of the objectives of the course will include a test with multiple choice quiz on topics listed in the extended program.
The student will be evaluated with votes ranging from 0 to 30, with 18 being the lowest vote to positively pass the exam. The final vote will be decided by mutual agreement among the teachers of the integrated course.
Students with SLD / BSE must first contact “Il centro accoglienza e inclusione” (https://www.cai.unipr.it/).
