Learning objectives

The Urban Planning Studio for the Sustainable City provides students with advanced knowledge in the analysis and assessment of urban and territorial settlements. The Studio aims at making students able to face the reading and interpretation of the current urban planning tools in the perspective of environmental, social and economic sustainability.
The studio deals with these issues by integrating the teachings of Urban planning for sustainability, Open Space planning and city ecology, Landscape planning and design, Urban and environmental applied physic, Economic evaluation of plans and projects.
During the modules, students will be able to acquire skills related to the planning methods of the contemporary city, with attention to the regeneration processes of the existing city, on urban planning techniques for adaptation to climate change and to the most appropriate settlement morphologies.

Prerequisites

The student is supposed to have a slight conscience on institutional themes concerning the city and, mostly, on procedures of urban analysis.

Course unit content

The Urban Planning Studio for the Sustainable City is divided in 4 modules:

- URBAN AND SUSTAINABLE PLANNING (6 credits)
- OPEN SPACE PLANNING AND URBAN ECOLOGY (6 credits)
- LANDSCAPE PLANNING AND DESIGN (4 credits)
- ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF PLANS AND PROJECTS (4 credits).

Teaching methods

The course will be delivered mainly in class (online lessons will be provided only for students with proven difficulties related to the COVID-19 pandemics).
Teaching methods include:
• Lectures, surveys, in-class discussion and exercises
• Assignments and deliverables
• Practical Urban Regeneration Design Work (in small groups up to 3 students)
• Study visits or guest lectures.

Assessment methods and criteria

The overall evaluation of the Studio will be the results of the evaluations for the activities of all the modules.
The final exam is composed of three aspects:
1) discussion about solutions and statements assumed for the practical Urban Regeneration Design work;
2) oral or written test on theoretical and cultural aspects;
3) assignments to be delivered during the course.

Other information

Attending 70% of the lessons is compulsory for admission to final exam.
