Learning objectives

At the end of the course the student must be able:
to build simple circuits in DC and AC
to measure magnetic fields
to use basic instrumentation for electric measurements (analogic and digital multimeters, oscilloscopes)
master the basic principles of geometrical optics, physical optics, sources and sensors of light
Moreover the student must be able to:
set up independently an experiment
evaluate critically the data and place them in the theoretical framework
check systematic errors
report clearly in written and oral form the results and the analysis of the experiment

Prerequisites

Introduzione alla Scienza dei Materiali

Course unit content

The course concerns theoretical classes and experiments about fundamental electrical circuits, electromagnetism and optics.

Bibliography

For the error analysis refer to the texts in use in the course “Introduzione alla Scienza dei Materiali”.
The course classes are distributed through Elly to students.

Teaching methods

Classes will consist of short theoretical lessons, as well as experiments made directly by the students. Students will be divided in groups of 2/3 persons to deal with each experiment and to write the relative report. Each group will be provided with lecture notes describing the experiments to be carried out and the theoretical framework. The teacher will provide continuous assistance in the lab. Lessons material will be provided through Elly.

Assessment methods and criteria

The progress of the student along the guidelines will be evaluated through:
- supervision of the student during the laboratory lessons
- written experimental reports
- a final oral exam
The final grade will be determined by the attendance and attitude during lectures and lab (25%) and by the final oral exam (75%).
The oral test will regard the discussion of a few topics proposed in the course, it is required that the student is able to comment critically the experimental reports.
To pass the exam the student must have participated to 80% of the lab experiences, he must deliver the written experimental reports, exhibiting, in particular, sufficient understanding of the topics during the oral exam.
