Learning objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a good knowledge of the main theories and processes studied by developmental psychology;
- critically reflect on the course content;
- proficiently communicate the acquired knowledge.

Course unit content

The course will discuss the main developmental processes related to cognitive, affective and social development during childhood and adolescence. The course will also consider the role of specific characteristics of contemporary society (such as new technologies and cultural transformations) on individual development. Research methodologies and practical implications of the theoretical knowledge will be discussed. Lastly, the course aims to offer opportunities to develop soft skills such as autonomy of judgement and critical thinking with respect to the contents discussed e communication skills.

Teaching methods

The course will be given in presence, in observance of the norms for safety. The lessons will alternate moments of transmissive teaching with spaces dedicated to students’ active participation using cues for discussion and practical individual or group activities. Slides, other didactic materials, and useful information will be posted on the platform Elly shortly before or after class. Students are encouraged to frequently check the platform for new information.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam will consist of a written test. The test will include a firs part with 15 multiple-choice questions and a second part with three short-answer questions. The second part will be evaluated only if the first part will have achieved a passing grade (at least 10 correct answers on the total 15). Each of the three open-answer questions will graded on a 1 to 10 scale based on the quality of the contents and of the exposition (more details will be provided in the course). The final grade will result from the sum of the three scores, the passing grade is 18.
