Learning objectives

- To know different classes of materials.
- To know different uses of materials and how they are applied to solve concrete problems in research and industry.
- To develop a critical sense of modern issues of sustainability and innovation, applying an interdisciplinary approach.
- Be able to find and select bibliographic references on specific topics and to evaluate the quality of scientific articles;
- Ability to prepare and present scientific seminars on scientific-technological topics.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of physics, chemistry and thermodynamics.

Course unit content

The course mainly deals with providing the basic knowledge on various materials applications, of particular industrial relevance. Reference materials will be explored in key sectors of materials science and technology. The main applications shown will be in the fields of energy, catalysis, soft matter, colorimetry, composites, quantum dots, surface. Learning about industrial problems and studying materials and their applications from different points of view constitutes a fundamental and necessary knowledge, at the basis of modern research, in the formation of a future materials scientist.

Teaching methods

Lectures, preparation of specialized seminars. Copies of the slides and materials used during the lessons will be provided to the students.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination consists of one or two presentations of a specialized topic chosen from a series proposed by the teacher. The presentation, lasting about 60 minutes, is made in the presence of the teacher and other students of the course. Based on the quality of the presentation (understanding of the topic, its collocation in the context of the general theme, exhibit clarity) and on the knowledge of the topics discussed in the course, the teacher will give a valuation. The student can accept this evaluation as a final vote or ask for a supplementary interview to modify that evaluation.

Other information

Possible visit to material preparation laboratories on the Science and Technology Campus of the University of Parma and in companies in the province.
Possible active participation by companies through educational seminars.
