Basic knowledge of dental biomaterials for clinical use

Course unit content

Specific knowledge on:
- science and dental materials technology
- Review of matter: composition, structure and state of aggregation, equilibrium states, adhesion and cohesion
General properties of materials: biological, physical, mechanical, electrical, thermal and technological
- Techniques of materials analysis by microscopy
- Biocompatibility of dental materials and main related tests
- Polymeric materials: structure and general properties, properties of macromolecules, length, weight, and average size of a macromolecule. The macromolecule in solution and condensed state. Amorphous and crystalline polymers, viscoelasticity in the amorphous phase, mobility of macromolecules, the stages of polymerization Synthetic polymers: prosthesis resins
- Composite materials: bisphenologylglycidylmethacrylate-based materials, reinforcers, microfilled composites, hybrid composites, curing mechanisms, self-activation, photoactivation, the activator-initiator system, irradiation polymerization, the camphorquinone-tertiary amine system, degree of polymer conversion.
- Waxes for dental use.
- Metallic materials: solidification and structure, deformation, hardening, recrystallization and grain growth. Materials for implant therapy (titanium, dental implants, zirconia).
Metal alloys: constitution and reaction in the solid state. Noble metal alloys for casting, nonnoble metal alloys for casting, the noble and vile semi-processed metal alloys. Heat treatment, corrosion and welding. Amalgam alloys and their structure.
- Dental ceramics: classification and their structure.
- Elastic impression materials: irreversible hydrocolloids, reversible hydrocolloids, elastomers.
Rigid impression materials: thermoplastic pastes, plasters, Zinc-Eugenol oxide pastes.
- Dental cements: classification, composition and structure. Glass ionomers.
- Bone tissue engineering materials ( biomaterials, stem cells).
